NORTH GUWAHATI, Aug 18 - Despite demands from the public of both North Guwahati and Guwahati for the past four decades for a bridge between the two banks, the Government of Assam and the Central Government have not responded. Various meetings were held in the past few years and a committee for the construction of a bridge between Guwahati and North Guwahati was formed. After holding various meetings in both the city (at Guwahati Press Club) and North Guwahati areas, the committee headed by Dr Kokil Boruah and Diganta Bora as president and secretary respectively arranged a bike rally recently.
The rally was joined by about 300-400 people, including men above 50 years. The bikes paraded important villages in and outside North Guwahati.
In the evening of the day, a public meeting was arranged in the auditorium of the Bihlongani Namghar with the president of the bridge construction demand committee Dr Kokil Boruah in the chair. Earlier, Utpal Choudhury while welcoming the invited guests and others presented a description of the works pursued by the demand committee so far. The meeting was addressed among others by Dr Arup Sarmah and Dr Mrinal Kanti Dutta of the IIT, North Guwahati, Keshab Kalita, president, Assam Union of Working Journalists, and veteran social activist Kailash Sarmah of �Save Guwahati, Build Guwahati.�
It may be cited that the rallyists started their journey from the Doul Govinda where the president of the temple management committee, Sachin Bhuyan flagged it off. Besides, the secretary of the bridge demand construction committee, Diganta Bora, other speakers included Brajendra Boruah, Mohon Saikia, Sachin Bhuyan, Usha Devi, Nirmaleswar Goswami, Niranjan Bora, Mukul Hazarika etc. Earlier, Prafulla Buragohain, a senior citizen lit the earthen lamp at the beginning of the meeting.
