Bribe accusation

BARPETA, May 27 � Sensation prevails here over reported demand of cash amount by a doctor in the Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Medical College Hospital here from a patient on May 23.

According to an allegation levelled by one Saif Ali, a resident of Daisingri in the district, his daughter-in-law Himakshi Kalita was brought to the hospital on May 22 for a health examination. She was produced before Dr Bharati Das, who demanded an amount of Rs 2,000 in lieu of the examination. But the family had no money with them at that time and returned home.

They came back again the following day, convinced the doctor to take Rs 1,000 and paid the amount in cash. But Saif Ali recorded the entire episode on his mobile phone and made it available to a section of media here that day. He also lodged a complaint with the Barpeta police the next day. The police has registered a case and investigation is on.

The college authority has set up a departmental inquiry against the doctor. Dr Pradip Kumar Ojah, superintendent of the hospital, informed that an inquiry team has been constituted and has been asked to submit its report within Friday.
