GUWAHATI, May 29 - Breast cancer should not be viewed as a dreaded and incurable disease these days. If diagnosed in its early stage and adequately treated, it could be cured completely.
This was the view expressed by Dr Bhabesh Kumar Das, Professor-cum-Consultant, Department of Surgical Oncology, State Cancer Institute, Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) here while addressing an awareness programme on the disease.
The programme was organised by Rotary Club of Guwahati and Inner Wheel Club of Guwahati, in collaboration with the Health and Hygiene Cell of the city�s Handique Girls� College recently, said a delayed press release here.
Dr Das said that sadly enough, lots of patients go to the doctors in the late stage of the disease mostly because of lack of awareness, poverty, ignorance, myths and misconception regarding the disease. Consequently treatment of the disease becomes difficult and expensive, he added.
The brief inaugural session was initiated by Dr Rose Mary B Choudhury, convener, Health and Hygiene Cell of Handique Girls� College. Engineer AN Laskar, president of Rotary Club of Guwahati who presided over the inaugural session, spoke on the activities being carried out by the Rotary Club and the Inner Wheel Club of Guwahati.
Dr Utpal Dutta, Principal of the college who inaugurated the event as the chief guest, emphasised awareness about cancer and said that such educative programmes would surely benefit and help people fight cancer.
The event was attended by a large number of girl students, teachers and members of both the clubs. Earlier, Debojani Das, president of Inner Wheel Club of Guwahati welcomed the participants.
Senior Rotarian SR Saikia spoke on the objective of the meeting. He also said that the Rotary Club is for three Hs: Health, Hunger and Hygiene.
