Breach in Beki dyke poses threat to Manas

By Correspondent

BARPETA, July 2 With almost all the rivers in Barpeta and neighboring Baksa districts flowing above the danger mark, the flood situation has become grim. All the major rivers such as Beki, Manah, Pahumara, Nakhanda, Mara Chaulkhoa and Bhelengi are flowing above the danger level and the water in all the rivers including that of the Brahmaputra shows a rising trend.

The Brahmaputra has posed a serious threat to the newly built embankment in the Bahari Pazarbhanga sector and according to the informed sources, it is going to be breached anytime from now. The old embankment of the river in this section has developed holes in two parts which has also threatened the existence of several villges under Chenga and Barpeta Revenue circles in the district. Low lying areas in the district have been completely submerged due to the incessant rains in the last few days and people are spending sleepless nights with an apprehension of breach of the Brahmaputra embankment.

Meanwhile, the Beki has breached its embankment in Bhumuk in the middle of the world famous Manas National Park and Tiger Project and is flowing towards the east. A culvert in the Panchmail area on the road connecting Mathanguri, the all important part of the park with the Bansbari range, was washed away by the strong current of the Beki river. This has disrupted communication within the park and has inundated a large area of the park and several adjoining villages .It is apprehended that if no emergency step is taken to plug the embankment, a grim situation may arise.

According to reports available, a vast area of the park is under flood water and it has become a problem to monitor the movement of animals due to the disruption in communication. A park official told this correspondent that till now there has been no loss to the denizens of the park but such a situation can not be averted if the flood persists for long.

Breach of Beki embankments at Narayanguri had affected the people of Barpeta and Baksa district in 2004 and 2007. But it could not inflict more harm to the park as it occurred towards the southern border of the park.
