Brajawali-Assamese dictionary released

BISWANATH CHARIALI, Feb 21 � Adding a unique contribution to Assamese literature, a Brajawali-Assamese dictionary was released here recently at a function held at Binapani Natya Mandir under the initiative of Jonali Chora. The 645-page dictionary has been compiled by retired teacher Hiren Bhagawati with English translations and meanings.

Releasing the dictionary, Rana Prasad Hazarika, retired associate professor, Biswanath College, commented that it would help the readers to do away with the difficulties while studying old Assamese literature. He said that a dictionary plays an important role in a language.

The function was presided over by Phatik Hazarika while it was conducted by Dilip Kumar Bhattacharya, the convenor of Jonaki Chora. It commenced with a flute recital by Rohit Ch Malakar and a good number of poets including Ganesh Das, Jamir Ahmed etc. enthralled the audience with recitation of poems and Maya Borthakur with a song. The compiler was felicitated in the function. Noted play wright, Tarun Saikia, social workers, Dr Kosheswar Borah, Jiten Bhagawati, Tilak Sharma, Uttam Dadhara, Hari Upadhyay etc. were present on the occasion.

It took six years to complete the dictionary and it has extracts from the old mythologies such as Arjun Bhanjan, Adbhut Ramayan, Anadi Patan, Aniruddha�s Geet, Karna Parba, Kankhowa, Gurucharit, Gunamala, Chordhara Pimpara Guchoa, Bheem Charit, Bhakti Ratnawali, Ayoddhya Kanda etc.
