Brajamohan Sarma lecture tomorrow

GUWAHATI, Dec 4 - Distinguished academic, former dean of School of Social Sciences and head of the Department of Political Science, North East Hill University (NEHU) Prof Apurba Kumar Baruah will deliver the 16th Brajamohan Sarma Memorial Annual Lecture on the topic �Prospects of Alternative Politics in an Internal Colony� online on Zoom on December 6 from 11.30 am, according to a press release.

The lecture acquires significance in the wake of the prevailing socio-political environment in Assam and Prof Baruah is expected to speak on the issue of an alternative political movement and its present status in the State.

The Brajamohan Sarma Memorial Trust, Guwahati organises the annual lecture in the memory of late Brajamohan Sarma, former advocate of the Gauhati High Court and a flag bearer of the weaker sections of society, to raise public awareness and mobilise public opinion on contemporary issues concerning the citizens in general and the downtrodden of society in particular. It has been organising the annual event since his demise in 2004.

While Dr Prabhat Patnaik of Jawaharlal Nehru University delivered the first lecture in the series in 2005 on the topic �The Judiciary and the Empowerment of the People�, subsequent lectures on wide-ranging topics were delivered by distinguished people like Sitaram Yechury, Prof Jayati Ghosh, Prof Malini Bhattacharjee, Brinda Karat, Siddhartha Varadarajan, Prof Manoranjan Mohanty, Justice (retd) DN Chowdhury, Padma Shri awardee Patricia Mukhim, Dr Hiren Gohain, Dr Amarjyoti Choudhury, Prof Emeritus Utsa Patnaik, P Sainath, Udayan Misra and Arup Dutta, the release added.
