KOKRAJHAR, Sept 29 - The youth wing of the Bodoland Peoples Front (BPF) and the Bodoland Students Union (BSU) today jointly took out a rally in Kokrajhar town to put pressure to hold the general elections to the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) at the earliest.
The rally which began from the BPFs central office situated at JD Road in Kokrajhar town ended at the Deputy Commissioners office at Kokrajhar. Former Executive Members of BTC Doneswar Goyari and Rajib Kumar Brahma, BSU president Derhasat Basumatary and other top BPF leaders also joined the rally.
The rally was flagged off by BPF supremo Hagrama Mohilary. Around 100 members of the
youth wing of BPF and BSU participated in the rally with banners and posters.
Later, they also submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister of Assam Sarbananda Sonowal and the Election Commissioner of Assam through the Deputy Commissioner of Kokrajhar with the demand to hold BTC elections within October and to stop further extension of Governors Rule in BTC.
Talking to mediapersons, BPF superemo Hagrama Mohilary alleged that the Government of Assam had murdered democracy in BTC. He also said that elections are being held in other parts of the country despite Covid-19 pandemic, but the Government of Assam was delaying the BTC elections under the pretext of the pandemic which is very unfortunate, he said. He further revealed that elections could be held in BTC by following guidelines of social distancing and using masks and other Covid-19 protocols framed by the Government of India. At the same time, Mohilary also said that if the request is not acceded to, the BPF will take up other means of democratic protest in the days to come.
It may be mentioned here that recently several organisations of BTC have submitted memorandums to the Chief Minister of Assam and State Election Commissioner through the Deputy Commissioner of Kokrajhar demanding early elections to BTC and also urged the Government of Assam not to extend the period of Governors Rule in BTC beyond October next on the pretext of the situation arising out of the Covid-19 pandemic.
