BPF declares series of agitational programmes

By Correspondent

KOKRAJHAR, Sept 26 - The Bodoland Peoples Front (BPF) today declared a series of agitational programmes over the demand of holding early BTC general elections 2020.

Talking to media persons this afternoon here at the BPF central office at Kokrajhar, BPF general secretary Probin Boro informed that the BPF will organise a series of democratic agitational programmes like dharna, mass crying with torchlight, bike rally, hunger strike etc., from next Monday at different places of BTC on demand of holding BTC general elections before October 27 next.

Boro alleged that peoples democratic right has been curbed due to non-conduction of BTC elections. In Assam schools, colleges, offices, markets, shopping malls have been opened and people are moving and are involved in their day to day activities. Moreover, the inter-State and inter-district movement of the public and vehicles has also been allowed by the government so, there was no valid reason to defer the BTC general election, he said.

At the same time, he also cited a recent judgment delivered by a Division Bench of the Supreme Court in a case where it clearly opined that Covid-19 cannot be the ground for postponing elections or to deferring them.

Boro also stated that BPF is maintaining its commitment towards keeping alliance with the BJP-led government but on the contrary, the BJP is betraying the alliance with its double standards which is most unfortunate, he alleged.

Renaming unconstitutional: BPF supremo and former Chief of BTC Hagrama Mohilary has said that renaming the Bodoland Territorial Area Districts (BTAD) to Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) is totally unconstitutional.

Talking to mediapersons here at Kokrajhar just after a notification issued by the Governor of Assam regarding the new nomenclature of BTAD as BTR and the announcement made by the Assam Health Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday, Hagrama Mohilary expressing dissatisfaction on the matter said that without Cabinet approval, how could the Governor of Assam approve or issue a notification on this matter. He also termed the process as unconstitutional.

On the other hand, UPPL president and ex-ABSU president Promod Boro, who was one of the signatories of the Bodo Peace Accord welcomed the decision and thanked the Prime Minister Narenda Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Assam Governor, Assam Chief Minister and Heath Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma for taking active steps for implementation of some clauses of the Bodo Peace Accord which was signed on January 27 this year and hoped that the other clauses of the accord would be implemented soon in a phased manner.

Meanwhile, the All Bodo Students Union (ABSU) has also extended gratitude to the -government of Assam for its prompt initiative in implementing the BTR Accord. The renaming of BTAD to BTR has been done according to Clause 3.3 of the Accord by the Governor of Assam, which is of great significance and honour for the Bodo Accord signed by Bodoland movement groups, said the general secretary of ABSU Lawrence Islary.
