Borkhola residents hard hit by eroded road stretch

By Staff Correspondent

SILCHAR, Sept 30 - The recurring problem of erosion and dilapidated roads at Borkhola constituency of Cachar district has once again hit the residents of Manikpur under the constituency.

People have made serious allegations against the apathy of the government in bringing measures to check river erosion affecting the embankment and PWD road on the site leaving the locals in dire straits. We have made numerous appeals to the government drawing attention to the erosion-hit site. But all our pleas have fallen on deaf ears so far, said Sarla Majumder, Kamrul Islam Barbhuiya and other locals as people of the area submitted a memorandum to PWD Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma on his recent visit to Barak Valley urging him to take steps to improve the Manikpur road which is the lifeline to thousands of people here. The locals have said that the Minister has assured a positive response to their demand.

The Tilain-Rajnagar-Karigorah stretch of road also shares a similar fate of alleged negligence as according to residents, around 100 metres of the section has already slided into the river Barak.

Asked about his response to the plight faced by the people of his constituency, Borkhola MLA Kishore Nath told The Assam Tribune on Tuesday, people of Manikpur are facing immense hardship because of the dilapidated condition of the road. I have raised the issue on the floor of the Assembly. However, the tender for the repair work was floated two months ago. But the repair work was delayed due to the outbreak of COVID-19 and subsequent lockdown followed by heavy rain. I assure the people that work at the site will start by another 10 days. The legislator informed that work for repairing 12 road stretches including the Silchar-Kalain road for which tender work is under process will start very shortly.
