Border trade at Moreh comes to grinding halt

By Newmai News

IMPHAL, July 14 - Cross border trade activities in Indo-Myanmar border town Moreh came to a grinding halt on Sunday owing to a 24-hour total shutdown called by civil society organisations in protest against the killing of a man.

Hill Tribal Council, Kuki Women Union & Human Rights, Kuki Students Organisation and Moreh Youth Club jointly imposed the total shutdown in protest against the alleged brutal killing of UKLF Moreh town commander John Gangte.

Gangte was shot dead by unknown armed persons on Saturday at Ngamkhai Veng under Moreh police station of Tengnoupal district of Manipur.

The shutdown which commenced at 5 pm Saturday severely hit normal life across the border town, particularly cross border trade between India and Myanmar.

In Moreh, almost all the business centres and shops downed their shutters for the day. No vehicle from Imphal arrived at the border town and no vehicle from Moreh left for Imphal for the day, the report said.

Meanwhile, security forces in the border town have launched a massive manhunt to nab the culprits with additional police rushing to the town.
