Border fencing tension

By ANN Service

NILAMBAZAR, July 31 - Tension prevails among the people living along the 3.5-km stretch of the Kushiyara river from Charakuri to Dewpur on the Indo-Bangla open border in Karimganj town, over the setting up of fences by the Border Security Force here. Local people allege that the BSF authorities have drawn up a map for setting up of fencing in which many people on the banks of the Kushiyara will lose their land and many will go into no-mans land. The BSF has reportedly issued instructions to those living along the border to leave the area, drawing a strong reaction from among the people. Karimganj MP Kripanath Mallah recently rushed to the area to study the situation and spoke to the BSF commandant. He urged the BSF to take special precautions so that the people are not harmed while installing border fencing. Earlier, former MLA and AIDC chairman Mission Ranjan Das visited the border area and had a meeting with the line commandant of Charakuri BSF camp. At the meeting, he demanded the installation of single fencing in the 3.5-km open part of the town areas and adequate compensation and rehabilitation to the affected families. He informed mediapersons that the BSF authorities have not issued any official notice to the inhabitants regarding acquisition or measuring of land. It is to be noted that Charbazar, Charakuri, Daspatti, Masjid Road, Purba Bazar and Santarbazar areas of Karimganj Town lie almost half along the border. As a result of the intense mass movement that took place here a few years back, the NBCC company left without working on the 3.5-km-long riverine border.
