GUWAHATI, Feb 16 � The Ministry of Food Processing Industries would provide more thrust to the growth of food-processing industries in the Northeast as there exists great potential of economic benefits and employment opportunities.
This was stated by Subodh Kant Sahai, in the presence of State Industries Minister Pradyut Bordoloi, at a meet with entrepreneurs of the region. In the event organised by the Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC), the Union Minister in charge of Food Processing Industries said that rejuvenation of the sector must begin with Assam as it was the gateway to the region.
Recognising the range of possibilities, the Ministry was keen to support a wide array of activities that would benefit growers as well as entrepreneurs in food processing. Among the key areas would be processing of endemic and exotic fruits which grow in the Northeast.
Sahai referred to the establishment of a mega food park in Nalbari district and said that he would review its progress from time to time. Moreover, he stated that his Ministry would like to extend all possible support necessary to its success and would encourage the building of forward and backward linkages.
He acknowledged the need to intervene in several areas if food processing industries would have to succeed in the Northeast, and was clear that he was looking for better banking and consultancy services for the region. He felt that Government policy alone would not make any difference if involvement from stakeholders was missing.
Admitting that the sector was previously neglected, the Minister said that he has tried hard to develop it through result oriented efforts. As a result, the sector has witnessed the highest growth in India in recent times.
Sahai stressed the need for a more investment friendly atmosphere in the Northeast, and urged the ICC to create a cell dedicated to the development of food processing industries. He also favoured a role for the DoNER in promoting the sector.
Speaking on the occasion, State Industries Minister, Pradyut Bordoloi conveyed his gratitude to Sahai for his interest in promoting food processing in a state known for horticultural produce.
On the mega food park currently under development in Nalbari, Bordoloi said that it would be in the Private-Public Partnership mode and the Government has decided to give private parties more power to operate in the industries sector.
