Bookie, three others arrested

GUWAHATI, Dec 2 � The Bureau of Investigation (Economic Offences), Assam has arrested a cricket bookie along with three of his associates from Fancy Bazar area late last night for allegedly indulging in betting in the ongoing Airtel One Day International (ODI) series. The racket was operating from Fancy Bazar area.

The gang has been indulging in betting worth several lakhs since the beginning of the ODI series in Guwahati. This is the first instance of arrests of a bookie in the State.

The bookie identified as Lalit Surana (40), according to BIEO sources, was operating from Surana market located in Fancy Bazar area. The sleuths also recovered five cell phones and telephone sets and documents indicating betting worth sizeable amount of money, possibly having an inter-state link.

Three other associates included Rakesh Kumar (28), Nilambar Shah (30) and Ram Sagar (28) were also arrested.

�The matter is being probed and few more arrests are likely,� sources informed, adding that the gang apparently has agents scattered in different parts of the region.

Sources further informed that the betting was mostly done over telephone and accordingly money was collected through their agents.

The bookie was arrested when they were taking betting calls inside a room in the Surana market during the telecast of the second ODI between host India and New Zealand.
