By Staff reporter

GUWAHATI, June 17 A new book on Sattriya dances, songs and music was today formally released in the city. Authored by noted researcher Dr Jagannath Mahanta and brought out by Srimanta Foundation and Bhabani Books, the Sattriya Nritya Geet Baidyar Haatputhi has been described as a valuable addition to the existing corpus of knowledge related to Sattriya culture.

The volume meant primarily for students is a manual with a difference. According to the writer, it features various manifestations of Sattriya music and dances in the different sattras, but also reveals the unities which bind them as a single entity.

Releasing the book, eminent writer and former DGP of Assam Police, Harekrishna Deka said that the new book would be much appreciated because of the knowledge and insights of the author who has studied Sattriya dance and music over a long time. In his speech, he underlined the need to understand the folk as well as classical elements of Sattriya music and dance so that its pure form can be preserved for posterity.
