Book on Safiur Rahman Saikia released

GUWAHATI, July 29 - Safiur Rahman Saikia � Jeevan aru Kriti, an over 500-page collection of write-ups on the life and achievements of noted public health engineer and writer Safiur Rahman Saikia, was released by veteran journalist and former president of the Asam Sahitya Sabha Homen Borgohain at a largely-attended function held at the Panbazar auditorium of the Institution of Engineers here yesterday.

Releasing the collection, which contains the write-ups of over 100 writers and has been edited by Nikumoni Hussain with the assistance of Dr Parbin Ahmed, Borgohain said that Saikia, a former Chief Engineer of the State�s Public Health Engineering Department (PHED), has carved a niche for him by dint of his brilliant rendering of the poems of Parsian poet Rumi and others into Assamese. Moreover, Saikia, with his translation of the Sufi poems into Assamese, has also made a remarkable contribution to the Assamese literature, Borgohain said.

Saikia�s book � Mirza Ghalib: Jeevan, Darshan aru Sristi is a valuable work. His Deshe Deshe Mor Desh Achhe is a travelogue of a different approach, said Borgohain.

Former civil servant Dr Rohini Kumar Barua described Saikia�s Bhramanor Ananda as a pleasant travelogue. Senior journalist Hyder Hussain spoke on the family life of Saikia.

The function was also addressed by Dr TR Barbara, KG Dev Krori, DN Barua, RR Choudhury, Bharati Sarma, Nikumoni Hussain, Parag Phukan and Safiur Rahman Saikia, among others. It was presided over by Tabiul Hussain, stated a press release today.
