GUWAHATI, July 20 - A first of its kind book, written by a senior police officer, which underlines the role of officials in child protection and explains the relevant provisions of the law in simple language was released today.
Conceived four years back during a panel discussion on juvenile justice, the 350-page book titled Role of Duty Bearers in Child Protection and aims at creating awareness about different provisions of law.
�It took an effort of one year to write it. The book is divided into 17 chapters which cover eight departments. Ten chapters are related to police,� the writer, IGP (CID) Surendra Kumar said at the launch.
Containing 29 info-graphics and five forwards, the book covers all law amendments and relevant SC and HC orders. The writer was helped by a team of the Centre for Child Rights of National Law University and UNICEF.
�The level of awareness among functionaries is very low. If duty bearers are not aware of the provisions of law, it becomes very difficult to ensure child protection. Moreover, a lot of confusion has been created by multiple laws. I have tried to pick the relevant provisions of the law and put it in simple language for all the office bearers to understand,� said the writer.
The IGP said the book can be divided into eight small booklets, each relating to separate departments. The writer proposes to revise the book every year and it will be circulated across the country among office-bearers. The book will be available for free of cost.
Releasing the book, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal congratulated the writer and said it is the primary responsibility of every citizen to protect their children.
�The book will inspire all those who work in the field of child protection and help enforce laws of the land. It will also help create a beautiful and secure environment for our children,� said Sonowal while addressing the largely attended release function.
