Bonus dispute at Jaboka TE

SONARI, Sept 28 � A tense situation prevailed this morning at Jaboka TE under Sonari PS over a bonus payment dipute. Eight local office-bearers of Asom Chah Mazdoor Sangha (ACMS) including three women were injured in the incident. The labourers of Jaboka TE under Apeejay Surendra Group of Tea Estates (Singlo-India Tea Company) gheraoed the administrative building of the tea estate at about 6.30 am today alleging that they were cheated by giving 17 percent bonus yesterday evening instead of 20 per cent as declared earlier by the management of Jaboka TE.

The manager, K Bhattacharjee, told the agitated labourers that the company had paid 17 per cent bonus and asked the labourers to talk with local office-bearers of ACMS in this regard. At this, the labouerers became furious and vandalised the office room and physically assaulted the local office-bearers of ACMS who were present at the spot. Lukesh Tanti (secretary, ACMS, Jaboka unit), Punam Tanti (Secretary, Banfera unit, Punya Bawri (Secretary, Khamlung unit), Basanti Bhumij, Phulmoti Keot, Marami Banikdas, Janardan, Mun and Pradip Bawri received injuries in this incident. Marami Banikdas was admitted to hospital in a critical condition. Police was deployed to control the situation. SDO (civil), Charaideo, Dhiren Hazarika assured the agitated labourers that the remaining 3 percent bonus would be paid to them. The labourers blamed the office-bearers of the local unit of ACMS for today�s incident who allegedly helped the management in paying of lower bonus to the labourers.
