Bongaigaon dist witnessing increase in criminal activities

BONGAIGAON, Sept 15 - Of late, Bongaigaon district is witnessing an increase in crime-related incidents right under the nose of the authorities concerned.

Snatching of mobile phones and other valuables by some motorcycle-borne youths in secluded places of the town are often being reported. Such incidents have increased amid the COVID-19 restrictions in the district.

In a recent such incident, a local scribe lodged a police complaint after a bike-borne youth attempted to snatch his mobile phone near the Deputy Commissioner's residence here on Saturday.

Cattle, contrabands and other illegal items are smuggled on trucks passing through the national highway across Kokrajhar, Chirang and Bongaigaon districts during night hours.

The Bongaigaon district forest squad seized a truck loaded with body parts of animals on Sunday night at Goraimari under Manikpur Police Station in the district.

Similarly, police rescued a truck driver from Varanasi and his assistant from Khagarpur under Abhayapuri Police Station in the district on Sunday morning. Abductors left the duo in a jungle, besides the highway. They were blindfolded and their hands tied behind.

According to a local trader, a huge quantity of mustered oil packets were stolen from his godown.

A few days back, burglars decamped with gold ornaments and other valuable items from the Raas temple located in the heart of the town. A similar incident occurred at the Dolaigaon Hari Mandir a few days back.

In the last month, two goat lifters from the town were handed over to the police at the North Bongaigaon Patrol Post.
