Bomb blasts in Manipur, no casualty

IMPHAL, May 23 � Two bombs exploded at two places in Manipur last night. However, there is no report of any casualty in the blasts.

Reports said barely 30 minutes after a blast was triggered close to Nongada residence of Manipur Agriculture Minister Ph Parijat in Imphal East district, a second powerful bomb exploded at M G avenue, just few metres from the City Police station complex in the heart of Imphal town around 8.30 pm last night.

The bomb, suspected to have been planted by some unidentified militants, went off near the south-western side fencing of Mahatama Gandhi�s statue at M G avenue. No one was hurt in the explosion, though window panes of the nearby buildings suffered damages.

There were no reports of casualty in the blast near the Minister Parijat�s residence, police said. The motive behind the explosions is not known.

In another incident, a havildar of the Indian Reserve Battalion, a paramilitary organisation was arrested for his alleged involvement in extortion and transportation of arms of People�s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK), a banned group.

Acting on a reliable information, Imphal West district police commandos arrested Havildar Thingujam Basanta from near the gate of Imphal College here around 2pm on Saturday.

�On spot verification, he disclosed that he is a Havildar of 2nd IRB and working under the command of one Rocky of PREPAK�, police said in a press release. �He was assigned to extort money from government contract works and also to transport arms and ammunition of PREPAK.� One mobile hand set was seized from his possession.
