Body of drowned Briton taken home

By The Assam Tribune

Shillong, June 29 (IANS): The body of a 25-year-old British woman, who drowned in Meghalaya's Umkynsan river, has been taken home to Britain today, police said.

Christina Louise Reed was swept away by strong currents in Umkynsan river Saturday afternoon when she went swimming along with her fiance Anthony Biddlecome and their friend Maxime Ostrander.

"Our divers recovered the body of Christina yesterday (Tuesday) and handed it over to her father Scott Reed after identification and completion of autopsy this (Wednesday) afternoon," East Khasi Hill district police AR Mawthoh told IANS.

Reed is a resident of Torquay in Devon and taught English while Biddlecombe, a trained lifeguard, is from the Isle of Wight.

Umkynsan river flows below the village of Laitkynsew and is about 62 km from state capital Shillong. The village is near Sohra, formerly known as Cherrapunjee, the second wettest place on earth after the nearby Mawsynram village.
