KOKRAJHAR, July 12 - The Bodoland University (BU), Kokrajhar observed the 20th foundation day of the varsity with a day-long colourful programme on its premises today.
Rajya Sabha MP Biswajit Daimary attended the function as the chief guest while BTC Deputy Chief Kampa Borgoyary inaugurated the public meeting with other invited guests and dignitaries.
In the meeting, footballer Holicharan Narzary, who represented the NEUFC in the Indian Super League was felicitated. However, Durga Boro, another NEUFC player was not present although he was to be felicitated along with others.
In the evening, the cultural programme was inaugurated by the BTC EM of Cultural Affairs Bonjar Daimary.
On the foundation day meeting, MLA Rabiram Narzary also spoke on the occasion along with other dignitaries. MLA of Bijni also attended the programme.
Earlier, the Vice Chancellor of the BU Prof Hemanta Kumar Baruah hoisted the flag of the varsity in the morning.
In his keynote address, the Registrar of Bodoland University Dr Shekar Brahma said that the BU is affiliated to University Grants Commission (UGC) under provision 2(F) since May 29, 2012 and it has been empowered to confer degrees under section 22 of the UGC Act 1956.
He said the application for according 12B Status of UGC to Bodoland University was submitted to the Secretary, UGC in 2012 itself but by that time the university had three deficiencies viz. VC quarter, administrative building and one post of professor in each department. So, the university was asked to fulfill those deficiencies. He also said that they completed the administrative building and the VC quarter last year itself.
Taking an assurance letter from the Commissioner, Higher Education, Assam to create one post of professor in each department, he said they met the UGC Chairman Prof Ved Prakash for 12B status. He said Prakash assured to help them in the matter since the university is in the scheduled area but they have to get at least five sanctioned posts of professors.
