Bodo Sahitya Sabha to institute new literary award

KOKRAJHAR, Jan 14 � The Bodo Sahitya Sabha (BSS) will institute the Probon Borgoyary Literary Award named after the former editor of The Bodo, the mouthpiece of the BSS, said Dr Kameswar Brahma, BSS president, at a press conference held at the BSS central office here. He added that Probon Borgayary had been the chief editor of The Bodo for three consecutive terms, and that his untimely demise was an irreparable loss to the Bodo society.

Borgoyary�s contribution to the progress of the Bodo language and literature is immense. Dr Brahma said that the family members of late Borgoyary donated a cheque of Rs 5 lakh to the BSS. At a central executive body meeting on Friday, it was decided to confer the Probon Borgoyary Literary Award on upcoming and creative writers in the Bodo language every two years. The award will comprise cash worth Rs 50,000 along with a citation to be commenced from 2014, Dr Brahma stated.

The BSS president informed that the 51st annual conference of the Bodo literary body would be held at Chhekamari-Madarihat in Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal on January 21-23. The programmes chalked out include exhibition, book fair and cultural show along with a delegates� session and release of souvenir among others.

Dr Brahma said that some awards would also be given away in the conference including the Ransgar, Sameswari Brahma Literary Award and the Sanjarang Lakshewar Brahma Cultural Award for the year 2011.

Successful candidates, who secured the highest marks in the Bodo language in the HSLC Examination, 2011, will be felicitated . Besides, Uthrisar Khungur Basumatary, awardee of the Sahitya Akademi Translation Award, 2010, Maheswar Narzary, awardee, Children�s Literature Award, Sahitya Akademi, 2011 and Dr Premananda Mushahary, awardee, Sahitya Akademi Award, 2011 will also be felicitated in the conference.

A literary session on the topic, �Introduction of Bodo-medium education in West Bengal State under the provision of RTE, 2009� will also be organised in this connection which will be chaired by Dr Mangalsing Hazowary, principal, Govt CTE, Kokrajhar, BTC. Gautam Deb, North Bengal Development Minister, will inaugurate the session.

Meanwhile, Jnanendra Nath Mandal, president of the reception committee, informed that preparations are going on in full swing for the BSS conference with an estimated budget of Rs 30 lakh. The objective is to promote the elevation of Bodo literary resources and culture in the neighboring State of West Bengal.
