GUWAHATI, Feb 22 The Bodo Sahitya Sabha has congratulated Gobinda Narzary, who had been honoured with the Sahitya Akademi Award for translating Premchands masterpiece Godan from Hindi into the Bodo language.

In a statement, the Sabha said that the Akademi award was timely, as Narzary has a long association with translation, besides contributing immensely to Bodo language and literature.

Narzary, whose translation of Godan was published by the Sabha in 2005, has a number of translated works to his credit. The list includes Wings of Fire by former President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, Nilakanthi Braja by Dr Mamoni Raisom Goswami, Kitap Padhar Ananda by Homen Borgohain, Samaj Bikashar Dhara and Samaj Biplav by Upen Nath, and Lage Amul Parivarttan by Ranjan Choudhury.

He has also completed the translation of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhayays classic Devdaas, which is to be published very soon. At the moment, he is busy translating Kecha Patar Kahini by Dr Prafulla Dutta Goswami.

Creative pursuits apart, Narzary has been extending his services to the Bodo community in different capacities. He has served the Bodo Sahitya Sabha as general secretary from 2005 to 2008, and is currently the convener of the Textbook Translation and Scrutinizing Committee that has been engaged in translating textbooks into the Bodo language.

Narzary has also been associated with a number of organizations including the Commission of Scientific and Technical Terminology (CSTT), Central Hindi Directorate, New Delhi, Central Institute of Indian Languages, Mysore and the Anundoram Barooah Institute of Language, Art and Culture, North Guwahati.
