Boat mishap at Chhaygaon

MIRZA, Sept 28 - Sensation has been prevailing in the Chhaygaon area over a boat mishap in the Kulsi river at Sampupara village today at around 1 pm.

Sources said that a mechanised country boat with around 150-200 passengers on board was coming to Gumi village from Hatichala in Chhaygaon LAC through the Kulsi river to witness a traditional boat race organised at Gumi under Chhaygaon Police Station in Kamrup district.

En route to Gumi, the boat capsized after colliding against a pillar of a wooden bridge on the Kulsi river at Sampupara village under Chhaygaon PS. Several passengers were reported missing since then.

Sources said over 40 NDRF personnel were pressed into service and the boat retrieved, while no dead body was recovered till the filing of this report .

Monium Ali ( 40) , an eyewitness, said that all the passengers of the boat swam ashore and it is believed that no casualty has occurred in the mishap.

Senior officials including Chhaygaon MLA Rekibuddin Ahmed , DC, Kamrup Vonod Seshan etc have rushed to the spot to assess the situation.
