Blood donated for cancer patients

By ANN Service

JORABAT, April 23 - As part of an initiative taken by Dr MN Baruah, managing director of the North East Cancer Hospital and Research Institute (NECHRI), Jorabat to present the gift of life to cancer patients on this Rongali Bihu, a blood donation camp was organised in association with the Assam Don Bosco University (ADBU) in its Tepesia campus today.

Dr Tushar Kanti Chakrabarty, in-charge of the NECHRI blood bank explained to the students the benefits of blood donation. He said blood donation does not make the donor weak. A unit of blood can save a precious life.

The colour of blood and love is the same. The donors today will be gifting love to the patients, said Dr Chakrabarty.

Dr Gitartha Roymedhi, in-charge and coordinator for hospital quality control and management, led the medical team from NECHRI. He was the first donor at the camp and urged the students to come forward to donate blood. He said, I wanted to be an Army officer and give my blood to protect the people of my land. I am doing the same today but in a different way. Although I am not in the camouflage uniform, I am feeling like a soldier because my blood will save a life.

Someones bone marrow can save the life of a patient suffering from diseases like thalassaemia and blood cancer, he added.

About 50 students of ADBU donated their blood. Although Dr Baruah could not attend the event, he had appreciated the donors by calling them heroes. He has also promised to award the donors with special certificates.
