Blockade ineffective

By The Assam Tribune

IMPHAL, Aug 9 A 20-day economic blockade called by Naga students since August 4 along two National Highways in Manipur failed to create any impact in the State with trucks carrying essential supplies plying normally on the routes, officials said here today.

Trucks were running on Imphal-Dimapur-Guwahati National Highway and Imphal-Jiribam-Silchar NH escorted by security personnel, they said.

The blockade was called by the United Naga Council (UNC) demanding withdrawal of prohibitory orders from some hill areas in the State.

Several civil organisations have appealed to the UNC to call off the economic blockade.

Manipur had recently faced an economic crisis due to a 68-day blockade on the two highways called by All Naga Students Association Manipur in protest against the elections to the autonomous district council. PTI
