Black panther gives birth to two cubs at State zoo

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Sept 10 - A black panther, Meena, gave birth to two cubs at the Assam State Zoo on Saturday night.

The father of the cubs is zoo-raised black panther Mohan, who was rescued five years ago. At that time, Mohan was just four months old, and since then he was raised in the zoo.

Meena was rescued from Dibrugarh in December 2017. She strayed into a village and was injured, and was then brought to the Assam State Zoo.

Meena and Mohan were paired up together in April this year. They share a great bond together and now are parents of two beautiful cubs. The zoo fraternity is extremely delighted and had a small celebration, Zoo DFO Tejas Mariswamy said.

Assam State Zoo is the only one in the country to have had four black panthers. Now, the number has risen to 6 after the two new births. The mother and the cubs are good and healthy, zoo authorities said.
