BJYM flays Govt over encroachment on Sattra land

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, July 22 The Bharatiya Janata Yuba Morcha (BJYM), Assam Pradesh has alleged that the Tarun Gogoi-led Congress Government has resorted to falsehood regarding the actual figure of Sattra land encroached on by dubious citizens.

The student body criticised the Governments alleged indifference towards the issue of encroachment on Sattra land and called upon the people of the State to wake up to the issue as it was related to the cultural and spiritual life of the State.

It needs to be mentioned here that the BJYM has been vocal about encroachment on Sattra land and it has already launched a series of agitational programmes to register its protest against the alleged Government inaction in the matter.

On July 19 Revenue Minister Prithvi Majhi gave the information in the Assembly session that more than one bigha land of Jania Sattra has been encroached on by the Muktab Madrassa Committee and Salekura Jania Samaj Unnayan Parishad which is only a part of the truth, alleged the BJYM, asserting that out of the 167 bigha land of Jania Sattra, around 160 bighas were encroached by dubious citizens.

President of the BJYM, Assam Pradesh, Mriganka Barman said that the youth body has completed a survey of Sattra land encroached on by dubious citizens and that it would continue its agitation to free the Sattra land.

It is a matter of regret that the State Government without any proper survey has provided the information that only around two bighas of land of Jania Sattra have been encroached on, said Barman, adding that BJYM members have visited the Jania Sattra and met the followers of the Vaishnavite sect who were preserving the Sattra.

Barman said that the information regarding the Jania Sattra provided by the Government would create confusion among the people and warned the Government against taking recourse to falsehood.

On the other hand, Barman said that the State Government has blatantly flouted the direction of the High Court in connection with freeing the encroached land of Sattras, Devalaya, Namghar, etc.
