BJPs call for free, fair civic polls

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Jan 13 The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Assam Pradesh on Tuesday expressed the apprehension that the forthcoming state civic polls might be tampered and called for a free and fair election.

State BJP president Siddhartha Bhattacharya said that all political parties including the ruling Congress should ensure that there is no manipulation. We have doubt whether the civic polls to be conducted on February 10 will be a free and fair exercise as the administration has always been dancing to the tune of the ruling party, said Bhattacharya.

The saffron party buoyed by its performance across the country is getting ready to contest the polls. The party has also formed election committee for local body elections and coordination committees as part of its poll strategy.

On the other hand, Bhattacharya said that the partys state executive meeting held here recently has come up with several resolutions on a wide gamut of issues including political, agricultural, economic, law and order situation. He said that the party is committed to the welfare of the common people and that all activities of the party will be people centric.

The senior BJP leader also rued the rampant corruption in the state and alleged that the Congress was promoting the culture of corruption. He further said that the Congress was least bothered about the miseries of the common people and urged the government to take steps to bring respite to the common man.

He pointed out that as the prices of petrol and diesel have been reduced, the state government should reduce the fare of city bus, trekker and auto rickshaw for the general people and students.

The party has also insisted that the state government submit the utilization certificates to the Central Government so that the Center could release other installments of fund and take steps for development of the tea gardens under the Assam Tea Corporation.
