GUWAHATI, Nov 22 - The controversy over the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill and the Centres recent decision to demonetise Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes failed to halt the BJP juggernaut in Assam, with candidates of the saffron party emerging victorious in the by-elections to the Lakhimpur Lok Sabha and Baithalangso Assembly constituencies.

Counting of votes in both the constituencies, which had gone to the polls on November 19, was carried out today.

Pradan Baruah of the ruling BJP emerged winner from the Lakhimpur Lok Sabha seat defeating his nearest rival Dr Hema Hari Prasanna Pegu of the Congress.

Baruah secured 5,51,663 votes, while Pegu clinched 3,61,444 votes. Amiya Kumar Handique of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) came third with 42,667 votes, while Independent candidate Dilip Moran secured 20,613 votes and Hem Kanti Miri of the Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist) got 12,402 votes.

There were also 16,438 NOTA votes too. The bypoll to the Lakhimpur Lok Sabha constituency was necessitated after Sarbananda Sonowal, who had been elected from the seat during the 2014 general elections, quit his membership of the Parliament and took over as the Chief Minister following the victory of the BJP-led alliance in the Assembly polls earlier this year.

Meanwhile, BJP candidate Dr Mansing Rongpi defeated his nearest Congress rival Ruponsing Ronghang in the by-election to the Baithalangso Assembly constituency.

Rongpi secured 72,160 votes as against 55,560 secured by Ronghang. Independent candidate Rajen Timung won 3,576 votes, while there were also 2,899 NOTA votes.

Rongpi had won from Baithalangso on a Congress ticket during the Assembly polls earlier this year but had later resigned his membership of the House after he left Congress and joined the BJP, thus necessitating the by-election.

North Lakhimpur Correspondents adds: In the three LAC segments of Lakhimpur district the BJP earned top positions in 111 Lakhimpur and 112 Dhakuwakhona LACs, where Pradan Baruah received 63,147 and 64,650 votes respectively. The Congress got maximum votes in 110 Nowboicha LAC where its candidate Dr Pegu got 81, 384 votes.

Soon after the announcement of the results, jubilant BJP supporters poured out on to the streets to celebrate the victories.

Our Diphu Correspondent adds: According to official report, 65 per cent voters turned out in the Baithalangso legislative Assembly by-election from the total 1,80,203 voters. There were 93,384 male voters and 86,819 female voters.
