BJP wins Inner Manipur seat, NPF bags Outer Manipur

IMPHAL, May 24 - Dr RK Ranjan of the ruling BJP and Dr Lorho S Pfoze of the Naga People�s Front (NPF) have been elected to the Lok Sabha from Manipur, official sources said today. The certificates of election were handed over to the winning candidates by the respective Returning Officers late last night.

Manipur has two Lok Sabha seats � Inner Manipur and Outer Manipur (ST).

In the Inner Manipur Parliamentary seat, Dr Ranjan secured 2,61,802 votes � 16,830 more than his rival Congress candidate, O Nabakishore, who secured 2,44,972 votes. CPI candidate Dr M Nara got 1,33,093 votes and came third.

On the other hand, NPF candidate Dr Lorho S Pfoze scored an emphatic victory by securing 73,782 more votes than his nearest rival BJP candidate, Benjamin Shokhopao Mate, who secured 2,89,745 votes. Dr Lorho secured a total of 3,63,527 votes. Congress candidate K James got 1,52,510 votes and was placed in the third position.

In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the Congress had won both the Lok Sabha seats in Manipur.

Overall the BJP candidate got the maximum votes from the Heingang constituency (20,176) and the least number of votes (3,583) from the Uripok constituency. On the other hand, Nabakishore bagged the maximum votes (16,333) from the Lilong constituency and the least number of votes (2,843) from the Singjamei constituency under the Inner Manipur seat which has 32 Assembly constituencies.

Meanwhile, in the Outer Manipur seat, NPF candidate Lorho bagged the highest number of votes (50,013) from the Mao constituency in Senapati district and the least number of votes (111) from the Thanlon constituency in Churachandpur district. BJP candidate Benjamin Mate bagged the highest number of votes (30,456) from the Saikot constituency in Churachandpur and the least votes (103) from the Mao constituency. The Outer Manipur seat has 28 Assembly constituencies.
