BJP wins Dhemaji bypoll

SILAPATHAR, April 13 - BJP candidate Dr Ranoj Pegu won the Dhemaji ST LAC seat by a margin of 9,285 votes today. Pegu received 75,217 votes, while Congress candidate Babul Sonowal got 65,932, CPM candidate Jadu Hazarika got 4,944 and SUCICI Hema Kanta Miri got 1,218. At least 1,371 voters opted to press the NOTA button in the bypoll.

There are 2,19,751 voters in Dhemaji LAC. As many as 1,50,029 votes were cast on the polling day on April 9 in 273 polling stations, out of which 1,12,510 votes were cast by male voters and 1,07,241 were cast by female voters. The counting started at 8 am today and the result came out at 11.30 am.

After the bypoll result, the BJP party members along with party candidate Pegu took out a rally from DRDA counting hall to district BJP election office. Pegu expressed his gratitude to all the voters of Dhemaji LAC and assured the people that he would fulfil the promises he made before poll.

In 2016, BJP candidate Pradan Baruah won the seat in a margin of 19,121 votes. Baruah received 69,592 votes while India National Congress (INC) candidate Sumitra Doley Patir got 50,471 votes. Earlier, the INC won the seat twice � in 2006 and 2011; and AGP won the seat four times � in 1985, 1991, 1996 and 2001.

Meanwhile, Dhemaji district Congress Committee organised a press meet in Dhemaji Indira Bhavan today where the district committee president Aboni Baruah and candidate Babul Sonowal blamed the BJP for alleged tempering the EVMs.
