BJP tribal wings resolution on Bru resettlement in Tripura

By Correspondent

AGARTALA, Oct 20 - Amid strong opposition from the people, the Janajati Morcha, a tribal organisation of the ruling BJP, passed a resolution in its recent State-level conference, seeking early resettlement of the Bru refugees in the State.

The Bru refugee issue has been a nagging problem for the past 24 years, forcing over 30,000 Reang tribals to stay in relief camps and leading miserable lives, said Morcha president Rebati Tripura today.

Briefing media persons on the outcome of the Janajati Morcha conference held at Ambassa in Dhalai district, Tripura said: We welcome the agreement on resettlement of Bru refugees in the State at a cost of Rs 600 crore. Now the time has come to push for the resettlement of the Bru people in the identified locations. This will end a long-standing issue.

However, he did not say anything on the growing resentment among the people over the decision of Bru resettlement. Tripura said the decision on an electoral alliance with the Indigenous Peoples Front of Tripura (IPFT) for the ensuing autonomous district council elections in the State would be taken by the partys central leadership.

In the Janajati Morcha executive committee meeting, we decided to consolidate the organisation in hilly areas. Issues like alliance with the IPFT or seat sharing will be decided by the partys central leadership based on the situation, he stated.

Tripura, also an MP, added that the Janajati Morcha would pressurise the Central Government to pass the proposed Constitution (Amendment) Bill in Parliament for conversion of the Tripura tribal council into the Twipra Territorial Council.
