BJP to take up issue with Centre

By Spl Correspondent

NEW DELHI, Dec 7 Beleaguered Congress-ruled State Government is likely to come under further pressure of the Opposition, with the BJP Parliamentary Party deciding to rake up the issue of multi-crore North Cachar Hills Autonomous District Council financial scam.

The decision figured at a meeting of the BJP Parliamentary Party, here on Tuesday, when Guwahati Lok Sabha MP, Bijoya Chakravarty raised the issue. The meeting decided to nominate Opposition Leader in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley, respectively, to take up the issue with the Centre.

The move comes a day after Comptroller and Auditor Generals (CAG) office handed over the Accountant Generals Special Audit report to the Parliaments Public Accounts Committee (PAC) headed by Dr Murli Manohar Joshi.

As reported, last week, BJP MP Ramen Deka, who is a member of the PAC, confirmed that they have asked CAG for the special audit report that was ordered by the Ministry of Home Affairs. The PAC is likely to go through it and submit a report to the Parliament, Deka added.

Further, the 44-member PAC has further decided to form a four-member sub-committee to closely examine the Non-Lapsable Pool of Central Resources administered by Minister for Development of the North Eastern Region, the BJP MP said.

Meanwhile, Guwahati Lok Sabha MP has dashed off a letter to the Prime Minister, stating that massive corruption involving hundreds of crores of rupees in a single district of Assam is unprecedented.

Unfortunately neither the State Government nor the Central Government has taken a serious view of the magnitude of this scam, she alleged.

Assam Government simply brushed aside the issue with frivolous remarks. There is no sense of accountability on the part of government, which is yet to book the culprits, she charged in her letter, copies of which were released to the media.

Meanwhile, addressing a press conference, Chakravarty and Kabindra Purkayastha attacked the Congress party, wondering why Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi was reluctant to punish the guilty.

The State BJP leaders demanded a special audit into the accounts of Karbi Anglong and Bodoland autonomous district councils.

If the financial irregularities in one district are of such magnitude then what could be the volume of financial irregularities in the other two autonomous district councils, Chakravarty and Purkayastha questioned.

The two MPs further alleged that not only did the State Government try to hamper the CAG audit, it has also not bothered to follow up on the special audit report by trying to pinpoint the culprits involved in the scam.

The Government of Assam should immediately order a thorough probe to determine where the excess funds have gone, Chakravarty opined, expressing her fear that a part of it may have gone to the insurgents.

Meanwhile, AGP MLAs and members of the steering committee have started arriving in the capital to take part in the dharna on Thursday to high-light the N C Hills scam.
