BJP to raise Manipur issue in Parliament

IMPHAL, July 7 � The BJP will raise the Manipur issue in the forthcoming Monsoon session of the Parliament this July end.

�The BJP will raise the State�s volatile situation arising out of the recently suspended blockade and the subsequent price hike of essential items, encroachment on border land, etc in both the houses of Parliament�, L Bashanta Sharma, Media affairs secretary of BJP State unit here said.

Opposition leader Sushma Swaraj will move the issue in the Lok Sabha while Deputy leader SS Ahluwalia will raise the issue in the Rajya Sabha, he added.

A BJP team led by Sushma Swaraj would be arriving in Manipur on Thursday on a two-day visit to assess the prevailing situation in the State. Rajya Sabha MP SS Ahluwalia and MP Bijoya Chakravarty and party�s zonal organising secretary P Chandrashekhar Rao would accompany the national leader.

The BJP leaders would address a party workers meet at GM Hall in Imphal soon after their arrival.

Meanwhile, in a move to control price rise, the All Manipur Anti-Drug Association, an NGO, has decided to launch a Campaign for Survival drive.

Ph Abe Chanu, the assistant general secretary of the association, said, �We have decided to launch the campaign after our drive against drug abuse and alcoholism was severely impacted by the price rise and unavailability of fuel�.

She said essential items were selling at exorbitant rates. Even the price of a matchbox shot up from a rupee to Rs 2 and potato from Rs 9 to Rs 22 per kg. She also lambasted Ministers and MLAs for remaining silent to the sufferings of the people.

When contacted, Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Yumkham Erabot said that steps are on to provide supplies to the public by requisitioning 100 extra trucks to transport the essential items besides the present transport system.

We need adequate stock for normal rationing of fuel, he said adding, �It will take some more time to restore normalcy�. The State need 75 kilolitres of petrol and 220 kilolitres of diesel daily.
