SILCHAR, May 11 - The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has reacted strongly over the divisive remarks made by former Congress minister Dr Ardhendu Kumar Dey on the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 issue.
Speaking to reporters here on Thursday, Dr Rajdeep Roy, spokesperson of the State BJP, said, The comments made by Dr Dey gives a clear indication of the bipartisan attitude of the Congress party which lacks principles and ethical philosophy. Assam is a mini India where people from all religions and languages reside in harmony. Assam was already fragmented four times with the formation of four new neighbouring States, which was really unfortunate. Hence, we reject and condemn the dangerous claims made by the former minister.
Hinting at former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi who had demanded a referendum on the issue, Dr Roy said views of the Congress and a section of intellectuals have surprisingly changed, which is detrimental to the overall progress and prosperity of the State.
Taking pot shots at the chaos across the State over the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 for which the JPC visited the State to study the perspectives of the people, Dr Roy maintained that the Bill speaks for security to only a minor section of the displaced population from Bangladesh, which in no way a threat to the indigenous people of Assam.
