GUWAHATI, March 6 � The State unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party has kicked off its mass signature campaign against price rise with a series of programmes across the State. This is part of the party�s countrywide agitation against price rise and the �Gaon Chalo, Ghar Ghar Chalo� programme.
Meanwhile, meetings have been held at various places of the State like Ekarani village under Sarupathar Development Block in Golaghat district, Silchar town, Barpeta Road, Teok, Titabor and other places in Jorhat district as part of the mass signature programme, said a State BJP statement here.
The party has decided to collect five lakh signatures from the cross section of the people in the State to mobilise public opinion on the issue. The spiralling rise in the prices of essential items has made life miserable for the common people, the party said.
It will submit the memorandums signed by the common people during the campaign to the President of India.
It has alleged that prices of rice and atta have galloped by 100 per cent during the UPA regime, while there has been 315 per cent rise in the price of sugar.
The rise in the price of mug dal during the UPA regime is 275 per cent, while there has been 227 per cent rise in the price of masur dal, 270 per cent rise in the price of rahor dal and 150 per cent rise in the price of mustard oil.
Tea has undergone a rise in its price by 87 per cent, while cooking gas has become dearer by 29 per cent during the UPA regime.
On the other hand, there has been a rise of 87 per cent in the price of cement and per 1000 pieces of bricks have become costlier by 168 per cent during the present regime, alleged the party.
