BJP playing politics over NRC: Cong

By STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, Aug 21 - Opposition Congress today alleged that the BJP is playing politics over the NRC issue and accused the ruling party of remaining mum despite the fact that names of many Bengali Hindus are missing from the final and complete draft of the document.

Addressing the media here today, Apurba Bhattacharya, general secretary and senior spokesperson of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), said the BJP has maintained silence on the issue despite the fact that names of many Hindu Bengalis, whose antecedents can be traced back to generations in Assam, are missing from the draft NRC.

BJP should clarify its stand. BJP should explain how the names of so many Hindu Bengalis are missing from the draft NRC, he said, and accused the ruling party of merely shedding crocodile tears for the Hindu Bengalis and of being insensitive to the problems really faced by the community.

Bhattacharya alleged that the BJPs stand on the entire issue of illegal immigrants is contradictory. On the one it claims to be committed to the process of NRC update and on the other the party wants to pass the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 BJP president Amit Shah used the term ghuspaithiye (infiltrators) to refer to all the more than 40 lakh people whose names do not figure in the draft NRC. Where did Shah get the authority to make such a statement? Bhattacharya wondered.

He said that many indigenous people of the State, as well as numerous Hindi-speaking, Nepali-speaking and Bengali-speaking persons have their names missing from the complete draft of NRC.
