SILCHAR, March 29 - In a bid to woo the voters of poll- bound Barak Valley, AICC vice president Rahul Gandhi slammed the BJP and the RSS, saying that the right wing forces are playing divisive politics to cause a breach of peace and communal harmony in the country.
Targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his speech at a public meeting at Kachudaram under Sonai Assembly constituency, 45 kms from Silchar, Rahul Gandhi said that unlike the Congress which talks of inclusive politics, the BJP is dividing people on the basis of religion. Referring to instances of violence at Haryana and Maharashtra, the AICC vice president said that if voted to power, BJP will destabilise the restoration of peace in Assam.
The Congress Government in the State has toiled hard over the past 15 years to restore peace. But if the BJP manages to sit on the throne, the turbulent days will come back, which will deter the pace of development in the State, Rahul said.
Interestingly, during Rahul Gandhis 25-minute speech, loud cries of Modi murdabaad could be distinctly heard from a section of the fairly large crowd. Reacting to the situation, Rahul said that such outburst of emotion is against the political principles of the Congress party and urged the voters to give a befitting reply by outplaying the BJP in the form of votes on April 4. He also mentioned that his doors are always open for the people of Barak Valley and he will be ready to help as and when required.
Our Diphu Correspondent adds: Rahul Gandhi campaigned here today for the party candidates. A big rally was organised at the Karbi Anglong Sports Association stadium, where the AICC vice presidents chopper landed about an hour late due to bad weather.
Soon after landing at the stadium, he was felicitated with a Karbi traditional jacket, pohohu and jambili athon. While addressing the rally, Rahul vehemently criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for failure to honour his promises.
Rahul claimed that Assam was in severe trouble 15 years ago, but normalcy was restored after the Congress came to power. The BJP always attempts to divide the common people, Rahul added.
He further said that Assam will be ruled from Nagpur and New Delhi if the BJP comes to power.
PTI adds: Rahul accused Modi of not fulfilling his promises of bringing back black money, bringing down prices or addressing the plight of farmers and the poor and instead allowed people like Vijay Mallya and Lalit Modi, who possessed black money, to escape from the country.
When I asked him in Parliament about his unfulfilled promises, he did not answer me, Gandhi said, asking people to pose these questions to Modi when he comes to seek their votes.
Rahul, however, made a host of promises himself from providing 10 lakh jobs to youth, filling up all vacant Government posts, giving jobs to 2 lakh teachers, providing rice at Rs 2 a kilo, cold storage facilities and agriculture banks to farmers and housing for all.
Apart from Rs 1,000 crore package announced by Tarun Gogoi, he also promised to open a medical, engineering and nursing college in the area.
We make promises and fulfil them. In the last 15 years, Congress party and Tarun Gogoi has worked for you and will work faster in the next 5 years. We will not leave behind anyone, be of any religion, caste or region, and we will take everyone along, he said.
