BJP opposes Govts new NRC form

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Dec 10 The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Assam Pradesh today strongly opposed the new NRC form the State government has come up with and announced that it would take up agitational programmes to protest against this step taken by the government.

Addressing media persons here, State BJP president Ranjit Dutta described the development as a 'conspiracy' of the Congress government and made it clear that the BJP would at all cost oppose the attempts of the Congress government to legalize the illegal Bangladeshis.

It needs to be mentioned here that the government since suspending the pilot project of NRC update in Chaygaon and Barpeta revenue circles had been saying that a few errors in the NRC form had created confusion and hurdles in the update process and rectification of those errors would ensure smooth completion of the update process. The government had also held a meeting with the All Assam Students Union (AASU) and 25 other organizations on this issue of modifying the NRC form and the organizations had rejected the government suggestion to exclude the birthplace from the NRC form.

Dutta said that mentioning the birth place was an important clause in the NRC form and exclusion of this vital clause in the new NRC forms was dangerous to the State and the indigenous communities. He further said that the clause has been dropped in the new NRC forms under the pressure of the All Assam Minority Students Union which had succeeded in getting the pilot project of NRC update suspended.

"The Congress is always concerned about its vote bank and interest of the State and its citizens is secondary to this party," said Dutta informing that the BJP will launch a State wide agitation on December 18 against the government. Dutta added that more than 50,000 members and supporters of BJP will participate in a jail bharo programme on this day.

"We demand of the government for a correct Voters List before the Assembly elections," said Dutta adding that the NRC update process must be started immediately across the State.

On the other hand, the party has demanded an Audit cum Judicial Commission headed by a sitting judge of the Supreme Court to initiate legal action against corrupted ministers and bureaucrats in the State.
