BJP on strong wicket in Assam: Jaitley

By Spl Correspondent

NEW DELHI, March 20 - The BJP on Sunday claimed that it is on a strong wicket and will win the Assembly elections in Assam.

Interacting with newsmen on the second and the last day of the BJPs National Executive meet here, Union Finance and Information and Broadcasting Minister, Arun Jaitley claimed that the BJP is in a very strong position in Assam and will form the government there.

The BJP alliance is prominent in Assam. Our membership has increased in Kerala and we will bring change there. We increased vote share in last polls in West Bengal. We will improve it this time also, he said.

Stating that the Congress has become a tailender in alliances, Jaitley also targeted the Congress for its alliance with regional parties in desperation to build an anti-BJP alliance in five states, where Assembly polls are due this summer. Look at Bihar, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu... the Congress has lowered its level of ambition. They have become tailenders of the alliance in all these states, said Jaitley.

On the government formation in Jammu and Kashmir, he said that the BJP is still committed to the agenda of governance in the state.

While answering a question about the political crisis in Uttarakhand, Jaitley attributed the present political turmoil to the Congress itself. He said that the party MLAs were not happy with their own leadership.

Its Congress internal crisis. Their own leaders were not happy. If maximum MLAs vote against finance bill, how can it pass in the Assembly. For the first time, the Assembly has passed a failed bill. It is a unique constitutional situation that the Speaker has passed the failed bill in Uttarakhand.

The Union Minister said that people in India should have no problem in chanting Bharat Mata Ki Jai. Jaitley said that his party believes there should be no debate on this issue.

The Constitution of India allows complete freedom to dissent but does not permit destruction of the nation. We believe this is one issue on which there should be no debate. People in India should have absolutely no difficulty as far as this slogan is concerned... the best example you saw at Eden Gardens yesterday, said Jaitley.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the concluding session of the BJP National Executive meet today. He had attended the opening day of the meet yesterday in which the party unanimously passed a resolution titled Gram Uday Se Bharat Uday. The resolution was moved by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari.
