BJP nominates ex-member for Mizoram bypoll

Aizawl, March 15: Lalhriatrenga Chhangte, a former BJP member, is all set to contest Serchhip by-election in central Mizoram on BJP ticket.

“Mizoram state BJP has nominated Chhangte as its candidate for the upcoming by-election, which has been approved in principle by our national general secretary (organisation) B L Santhosh,” a source in the state BJP office said.

However, official announcement from the BJP is yet to be made.

When contacted, Chhangte also confirmed that he would be contesting the bypoll on BJP ticket. He said he enrolled as BJP primary member at the BJP office here today, for the second time.

The former deputy controller of mines under the central government had joined the BJP for a brief period of ten months in 2019 to become the state BJP’s first chairman of “missionary cell.” A year later, the left the party citing that he had no hopes in the state BJP leaders.

Chhangte, a voter from Serchhip, had contested the 2019 Lok Sabha elections on independent ticket but lost to Mizo National Front’s candidate Lalrosanga. Chhangte secured 12,675 votes in the Lok Sabha elections.

By-election to Serchhip seat has been necessitated by the disqualification of its MLA Lalduhoma on grounds of “defection to another party.”
