BJP flays Gogoi over law and order

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, March 15 - The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Assam Pradesh today lashed out at the ruling Congress in the State for claiming improvement in the law-and-order situation. The BJP argued that this claim of the Congress government was not supported by facts. Referring to a host of instances where women have been subjected to abuse, it asserted that the Congress is just trying to hide reality.

BJP Assam Pradesh spokesperson Rupam Goswami lashed out at Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and accused him of making fake claims of providing security and protection to the people of the State. Goswami stated that according to a report of CNN IBN, 4,700 human trafficking cases have been registered in the State since 2012, out of which 2,750 involved cases of trafficking of women.

The CID has evidence that 130 girls from Assam had been forced into prostitution in 2015 alone, said Goswami, adding that it was disheartening to know that most of the trafficked girls belonged to the tribal communities of Assam. He chose to remind that even Minister Rakibul Hussain had stated in the State Assembly that cases registered for crime against women were increasing at an alarming rate.

The spokesperson further said that since 2011 crime against women has topped the list of all types of crimes committed in Assam. This is indeed a very serious issue. Crime against women has been escalating in the State, but regrettably the Tarun Gogoi government has failed to check it, said Goswami, observing that the State government is not capable of controlling the prevailing lawlessness in Assam.
