BJP fields Bhubaneswar, Daimary files nomination

GUWAHATI, March 11 - BPF candidate and joint nominee of the ruling NDA Biswajit Daimary today filed his nomination papers for the March 26 Rajya Sabha elections from Assam.The BJP meanwhile announced former Rajya Sabha MP Bhubaneswar Kalita as its candidate for the second Rajya Sabha seat from the State.

Elections to three Rajya Sabha seat of the State are scheduled for March 26.

Daimary submitted his nomination papers to Returning Officer AN Deka at the Assam Legislative Assembly complex here.

Daimary was accompanied by Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Finance Minister and NEDA convenor Himanta Biswa Sarma, BPF president and BTC chief Hagrama Mohilary, AGP president and Agriculture Minister Atul Bora and other senior leaders of the ruling alliance.

Daimary is a two-term Rajya Sabha MP and has been re-nominated for a third consecutive term by his party.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Sonowal said that the ruling alliance is confident of emerging victorious.

�We will inform you about our plan and strategy at an appropriate time,� Sonowal said.

Elections to three Rajya Sabha seats from Assam will be held on March 26 and results of the elections will be announced that same evening. The last date for filing of nomination papers by candidates is on March 13.

It is noteworthy that the current term of Daimary will end on April 9. Two other Rajya Sabha seats from Assam are vacant since last year following resignations by Bhubaneswar Kalita and Sanjay Sinh.

Kalita and Sinh had resigned from the Rajya Sabha and also quit the Congress party, before joining the BJP.

Going by the numbers, the ruling alliance can easily win two of the three seats going to the polls. BJP had earlier announced its decision to leave one of the seats for the BPF.
