GUWAHATI, Nov 12 The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Assam Pradesh today took a dig at Union Home Minister P Chidambaram saying that his fixed scheme behaviour and emphasis on closed door meetings are reasons for the failure of the government machinery in assessing the deteriorating law-and-order situation in Assam as well as in all the other Northeastern States.
Addressing media persons here, P Chandrasekhar, North East zonal organising secretary of BJP, regretted the Union Home Ministers disinterestedness in meeting the local organizations (that includes the State BJP too) and remarked that this attitude has stood in the way of feedback from the grassroots, the common people who have borne the brunt of escalating terrorism in the region.
Demanding a North East Security Council, Chandrasekhar pointed out that with militants calling the shots and running a parallel government in many parts of the region, a security council for the region was of paramount importance at this hour so that the security scenario could be reviewed on a day-to-day basis and decisions taken at the earliest.
The BJP called upon Chidambaram to decide on the interest of the country and not the Congress party by immediately adopting a clear-cut policy for the region on the basis of a comprehensive ground study to stop the proliferation of arms and flow of public money into the hands of militants.
Alleging that the Union Home Ministry has never given the instruction to the armed forces to take action against the militant groups against extortion and expansion of gun culture in the region, Chandrasekhar said that as the Congress party was in nexus with the militant groups to wrest power, the Centre has chosen to turn a blind eye towards the activities of the militant outfits.
The Congress and the militants are looting the common people, commented Chandrasekhar alleging that around Rs 2,000 crore from the development schemes and subsidies went to militant groups in the region every year, and in Assam around Rs 400 to 500 crore went to the extremists groups. This dangerous trend of industrialists, bureaucrats, politicians and militant nexus has been the cause of the pathetic condition of the region, he commented.
Slamming the Congress, Chandrasekhar added that as the ceasefire policies in the region have been influenced by the Congress partisan requirements, the peace process has been delayed. Ceasefire groups have been used selectively by the Congress party for their own benefits. Groups that have refused to support the Congress have not been offered the benefit of ceasefire, alleged Chandrasekhar.
