SHILLONG, June 11 The Meghalaya BJP today demanded the immediate release of pending salary of the employees of Government-run Mawmluh Cherra Cement Ltd. (MCCL) as it remains closed and employees are going without salary for over six months now.
The State unit of the BJP held a sit-in demonstration near the Additional Secretariat here together with the employees of MCCL. The employees are demanding that the Government release their salary as they are facing immense hardships.
BJP State unit president Khlur Sing asked how is it possible that several private cement factories are operating in the State and are making profit while the MCCL is on the verge of a permanent shut down. There has been huge investment in the MCCL. Moreover, raw material like limestone and coal are locally available but still the MCCL remains closed, he asked.
Last year, the 500-odd MCCL employees did not get salary for several months, but the State Government intervened and released their salary. But since there is no production in the company, the salary of the employees has been stopped again.
Sing said that the employees are facing difficulty in providing for their family two square meals a day and are unable to send their children to school. He also said the party would be sending a memorandum to Chief Minister Mukul Sangma for immediate release of employees salary.
The BJP president said if the State Government fails to alleviate the hardship of the MCCL employees then the Central Government must step in and take action.
