GUWAHATI, Aug 4 Attacking the Tarun Gogoi government for the deteriorating law-and-order situation in the State, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Assam Pradesh on Sunday said that the government was least bothered about ensuring security of life and property and demanded immediate imposition of Presidents Rule in Assam

Addressing mediapersons here at the party headquarters, national vice president of the party Bijoya Chakraborty said that law-and-order situation in the State has further deteriorated in the recent days after the Telangana Statehood issue.

We believe in democracy and want everything to be sorted out in a democratic way, but the way the Chief Minister of Assam has failed to address the law-and-order situation of the State we are forced to ask for Presidents Rule to control the turmoil in the State, said Guwahati MP Chakraborty, who represents Guwahati in the Lok Sabha.

Slamming the way Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi was handling the burning issues in the State, Chakraborty said the absence of the Chief Minister at a time when the State was going through a law-and-order crisis reflected his lackadaisical attitude towards the security aspect.

Now, Assam is nobodys business. Even the Chief Minister has gone to Delhi when the State needed his presence. This simply shows the negligent attitude of the Chief Minister. What is most unfortunate is that in spite of having all the inputs of possible chaos after the Telangana issue, the government failed to take timely steps to control the situation, she added.

Terming the ongoing violence in Karbi Anglong that has seen the destruction of many government buildings and other public property as unfortunate, Chakraborty said that the Congress government was more concerned with the dissidence issue rather than the destruction of life and property.

The top ministers of the State Government should have been in the violence-affected areas within two days and should have initiated the necessary steps to control the situation, she mentioned demanding that the government shake off its casual approach towards law and order and restore confidence among the common people.

It needs to be mentioned here that recently the BJP had demanded the intervention of the Governor of Assam to bring the law-and-order situation under control.
