BJP delegation meets Union Ministers on state council issue

By CORRESPONDENT

AGARTALA, Dec 5 - With Assembly elections round the corner; the BJP has demanded converting Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) into a full-fledged state council with direct funding to safeguard the interests and welfare of the indigenous people.

To press the demand, a BJP delegation met three Union Ministers- Jual Oram, Jitendra Singh and Kiran Rijiju in Delhi recently.

All the Union Ministers said they are in favour of converting TTAADC into a state council but it needs state governments consent, BJP state prabhari Sunil Deodhar told the media in the party headquarters here.

Minister of State for PMO Jitendra Singh assured that he would forward the issue before Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, he said.

It appears all the three Union Ministers are backing the demand for the interest of the indigenous people but an amendment is required, Deodhar who led the party delegation in Delhi said.

In federal structure, the Centre could not push such a move as it is the subject of the state government, he said adding that now it is the responsibility of the state to pass such a Bill in the state Assembly. If the state government initiates such a move, the Centre will of course do its best to get the Constitution amended for the betterment of the tribal council, he stated.
