By R Dutta Choudhury

GUWAHATI, April 21 - With unemployment becoming a major cause of concern for the youths, major political parties have admitted that it would not be possible to provide Government jobs to deal with the problem and there is need for industrialization and development to create job opportunities. Meanwhile, both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress are claiming credit for providing better educational facilities for youths of Assam.

The Assam Tribune tried to get the opinion of the parties on the crucial issues of education and employment and the leaders of both Congress and BJP admitted that there is need for rapid industrialization to deal with the problem of unemployment. Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Ripun Bora said that if voted to power, the Congress would revive the special industrial policy for the North East to attract investments, which is a must for rapid industrialization. He said that it is not possible for the Government to provide jobs to all the unemployed youths and there is need for providing other employment avenues for the youths. He said that though the BJP led Government organized a mega investors summit, it failed to attract investors to the State.

On the education front, Bora said that a large number of students from Assam and other states of the North East have to go outside for higher education and that is why, the Congress is planning to create a technical education hub in the region. He said that the Congress has already promised to transform several universities of the region as centres of excellence.

On the other hand, BJP state unit spokesman Rupam Goswami said that the mega development projects launched during the time of the BJP led Governments both at the Centre and in the State created employment avenues for a large number of youths. It is not possible for the Government to provide jobs to all the unemployed youths but it is a fact that a large number of youths are engaged in the implementation of the development projects and that created income generation avenues, he added. He also said that a number of schemes have been taken up for giving boost to small and medium industries to deal with the problem of unemployment, while, the efforts of the Government to attract investors is showing positive results.

On education front, Goswami said that the BJP Government made education free up to degree level for poor students, while, every year new medical and engineering colleges are coming up.
