BJP concern over increase in voters

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Sept 16 Expressing concern at the increase of nearly five lakh voters as per the revised and final electoral roll, the BJP today said that the development was fraught with ominous portents for the States future.

In a statement, the BJP, Assam Pradesh, said that the high increase in the number of voters in ten districts had established that the States demography was changing rapidly something that was against the interests of the States indigenous populace.

Districts like Dhubri, Goalpara, Barpeta, Hailakandi, Bongaigaon, Karimganj, Darrang, Nagaon, etc., have recorded an abnormal increase in the number of voters. Matters have been made worse by the reluctance of many members of the indigenous communities to get their names registered as voters, it said.

The BJP said that the last decade since 2001 saw the States electorate increase by 35 lakh, which was much above the national average. People of suspected citizenship have managed to get themselves registered as voters. This will soon result in transfer of political power to the hands of such doubtful citizens, it said, adding the people of Assam should exercise their right to franchise judiciously in view of the emerging disquieting development.
